Education and Development

Greek Language Schools - Overview
Welcome to the Greek School of the Hellenic Community of Vancouver (HCV). We offer Greek studies for students from pre-school to high school. We hope to provide a warm, safe and educationally rich environment to our students. Our goal is to offer programs that nurture a love and understanding of the Greek language, religion and culture. The HCV welcomes the active involvement of parents in the life of the school. A child's progress is significantly influenced by your participation in the education process. We encourage all of you to speak the Greek language and engage in Greek cultural and religious activities with your child whenever possible.

Sunday School
The HCV offers Sunday School to children from pre-school to grade 6. Currently we have 100 children enrolled in our Sunday School Program. The curriculum is based on the teachings of the Holy Bible. The younger children learn mostly through a hands on craft based teaching with lots of stories. The older grades (Grades 3 and up) do various activities based on the Bible readings. Each year at Christmas, all the Sunday School students put on a wonderful Christmas pageant.

We have a fabulous staff of volunteer teachers and assistants who volunteer every Sunday teaching and creating a wonderful learning environment for our children.

One of the goals Sunday School is to help our children understand what it means to be a good Christian and the importance of helping others. Some of the projects that our Sunday School is currently involved in includes:

  • "Little Angels" - involves the sponsorship of children in the Philippines in conjunction with the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Toronto.
  • Samaritans Purse - this program involves our Sunday School children organizing and sending a total of 78 shoe-boxes to children in developing countries.
  • "Hop-A-Thon" - an annual event that is held on St. Lazarus' Day, in which the children have a special church service and the Hop-a-Thon takes place after services. All proceeds from the Hop-A-Thon go towards Muscular Dystrophy
The Sunday School would not be possible without the continued support of its wonderful volunteers. We are always looking for volunteers to help out with this wonderful program. The time commitment is 1 hour per month. If you are interested in helping out, contact the Community's Offices at (604) 266-7148.
